In short, Mageia is a family of Mandriva desktop operating systems, it

– does not use sudo but su instead

– does not use apt but dnf instead

– does not use deb but rpm package format instead

– has online package search at madb.mageia.org

– has repositories divided into Core, Tainted, and Nonfree

– has Mageia Control Center (MCC

– has very comprehensive user manuals, and finally

– includes GNU Emacs.

So, for example, if you are accustomed to do commands like $ sudo apt install geany on Ubuntu, then you will begin with $ su and proceed with # dnf install geany on Mageia.

Steps to do so:

1. On the Mageia Welcome, click Media Sources

2. Click Edit software sources.

3. Media Sources dialog will show.

4. Click Add and answer Yes for any question showing.

5. A list of media sources (also known as repositories) choices will show.

6. Do not change any choice of media sources unless you know what you are doing.

7. Click OK.

For Firefox web browser, we recommend uBlock Origin for your convenience. This will block ads in every and all websites you browse.

For Dolphin file manager, make bookmarks of your favorite folders by dragging one of them and drop it to the left side right under Places and repeat for the others.

For your desktop, it is called KDE Plasma, drag an application from the application menu and drop it on the wallpaper area and select Link Here to create a shortcut.

For your office applications, it is called LibreOffice, we highly recommend our special tutorial to equip your LibreOffice with great Microsoft Office templates. It is a very good idea to make yourself productive and avoid wasting your time creating everything from scratch.

Lastly, as another example here we recommend Geany Code Editor for you who study Computer Science and programming in any language. # dnf install geany
