Ubuntu 24.04 Release Date Set for April 25, 2024
The next long-term support (LTS) release of Ubuntu, Ubuntu 24.04, is scheduled to be released on April 25, 2024.
Launchpad, the home of Ubuntu development, lists this as the final release date (though, as always, it is subject to change).
Another important date in the Ubuntu 24.04 release schedule is feature freeze, the point past which no major new features are added without request and approval. This is set to take place on February 29, 2024.
Ubuntu 24.04 beta will be released on April 4, 2024. This will allow for several weeks of intense testing to identify and iron out any notable issues.
Ubuntu 24.04 Expectations
The full Ubuntu 24.04 codename is as-yet unknown (it might be officially announced at the Ubuntu Summit 2023 in Riga, Latvia in early November) but we do know that the first half is ‘Noble’ —fitting for an LTS release since they are held in high regard.
LTS releases of Ubuntu receive 5 years of security updates, bug fixes, and select application updates, making them the most popular version of Ubuntu by far. Ubuntu Pro adds an additional 5 years of security coverage on top to give modern LTS releases a mind-blowing decade of support.
Ubuntu 24.04 will be the 10th LTS release of Ubuntu since 2006.
Alas, right now, we don’t know much about the new features and improvements that will be included in Ubuntu 24.04. It’s likely Noble will feature GNOME 46, and a new Linux kernel is a given. We should also see the first official release of an all-snap immutable Ubuntu desktop image too, which is exciting.
Stay tuned for more updates on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS in the coming months.
